The summer shop sales got underway in Palma yesterday with retailers offering discounts of up to 50 percent in an effort to cash-in on the thousands of tourists who are on the island at the moment.

For shop owners it is a great opportunity to shift thousands of unsold items. The recession has hit the high streets hard in Majorca and many smaller retailers have been forced to the wall. The big department stores have also battled for market share.

The sales will last for most of the month. At both branches of the El Corte Ingles department store yesterday sales were brisk. The store had slashed the price of many designer brands in an effort to attract the bargain hunters.
