Palma.—At 2am yesterday morning the alarm was raised after thick smoke was spotted billowing out of the car park under the Orinto block of apartments.

Within just four minutes, members of the Local Police were on the scene and immediately evacuated between 40 and 50 people, most of them British, out of the block as a precautionary measure.

Moments later the Guardia Civil and the Santa Ponds fire brigade were on the scene and one resident had to be rescued from the garage after getting trapped inside. He was rescued safe and sound but fire fighters had to wear breathing equipment to fight the garage blaze due to the thick toxic smoke.

Eventually, after two hours the fire, which caused widespread damage in the garage was put out and residents allowed to return home. The Guardia Civil has opened a full investigation and are keeping an open mind for the moment. The garage has been cordoned off.
