THE entire Council of Majorca, with the exception of the Partido Popular (PP), approved a proposal condemning General Franco's military uprising which caused the Spanish Civil War 70 years ago. The PP refused to vote on the proposal and instead called for a condemnation for the “violation of human rights by both sides.” The proposal was presented by the socialists and backed by the Majorcan Union (UM). The initial vote was a tie, broken by the vote of Council president Maria Antonia Munar of the UM. Yesterday, left-wing parties staged a demo at the Cross to the Civil War dead on Franco's side.
