AMSTERDAM
INDEPENDENT beach revew site Onbeach.com yesterday announced the top five of best beaches in Europe. Having compared over 3'000 beaches in Western Europe it concluded that Playa S'Amarador on Majorca should be considered “The Best Beach of Europe.” Situated at Portopetro in the eastern Majorcan municipality of Santanyi, Playa S'Amarador makes up for its short stretch from land to the sea by its ample width, crystal clear water and ultra-clean sand. Food and drink facilities are available on site without contaminating the landscape which forms part of the natural park of Mondragón. The unspoiled environment surrounding the beach consists of gentle wooded cliffs running down to the water's edge, providing an almost grandiose backdrop to what is a serene and safe spot for bathing, easily accessible on foot.

Gerben van Dam, managing director at Onbeach.com said: “Our teams have travelled to every single beach in France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. We have evaluated all beaches independently using over 100 criteria such as cleanliness, facilities and suitability for swimming. The quality of a beach is very important to tourists, with many liking to spend most of their time at a coastal spot. A poor beach may ultimately result in a disappointing holiday.

Top reviewer Annemarie Schouten visited over 800 beaches for Onbeach.com over the past year. She said: “I've visited hundreds of Caribbean beaches, still I believe that the Mediterranean offers the most beautiful and diverse coastline in the world.”
