NO less than 30 yachtsmen competing in the Copa del rey in Palma this week, raced in the last America's Cup in New Zealand.
Included in the 32 America's Cup competitors in Palma, are seven members of the victorious Swiss team Alinghi which won the 100 Guinea Trophy, giving Europe the right to host the 2007 Cup, the first time in the event's 152-year history. Palma's bid to host the cup has been boosted by 30'000 signatures of support from the general public, all of which were sent last week to the selection committee along with Palma's completed bid project. Now there is nothing that can be done until the selection committee decides which city out of Palma, Valencia, Naples, Lisbon and Marseilles is to host the 2007 event.
FINAL DAY
Caixa Galicia and Italtel will start today's final day of the Copa del Rey as virtual winners.
After yesterday's two races and the disqualification of Subaru X on Friday night, bar a late upset, it is pretty clear which yachts are going to win their categories. Baleria won the first IMS 500 race of the day and Zurich the IMS 600, but the second legs were won by Caixa Galicia and Italtel respectively.
The prize giving ceremony will be held this evening in the Real Club Nautico after which the crews will attend an end of regatta party.
