THE number of businesses active in the Balearics on January 1 this year was 91'254, which was an increase of 3.6 percent in comparison with 2006, according to figures released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The number of active businesses on the islands increased in the construction and services sector (except shops), and decreased in the commerce and industry sectors.

In absolute numbers, the number of shops decreased from 20'064 at the start of 2006 to 19'956 at the beginning of this year.
In much the same way, the number of companies doing industrial work fell slightly from 5'405 at the beginning of 2006 to 5'309 at the beginning of 2007.

The decrease in commerce and industrial companies was balanced out by the increase in the rest of the sectors.
In accordance with the figures published by the INE, the number of companies in the construction sector increased last year from 14'957 to 15'798.
In the same way, companies which come under the title “other services” (which excludes shops), increased by more than 2'500 companies, going from 47'601 at the beginning of 2006 to 50'110 at the beginning of 2007.

The number of active companies in the whole of Spain increased by 5.1 percent last year, taking the figure to 3'336'657 companies.
