In Ukraine the former prime minister Julia Tymochenko was imprisoned for allegedly signing an illegal gas deal with Russia in 2009. She sent a message to the European Union saying she feared for her life while in prison.

The Syrian government continued its oppression of demonstrators against its rule despite protests from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the Arab League; the United States called on Germany and Russia to join it in intensifying sanctions against the government of President Assad.

A Nato helicopter was shot down while on a mission in Afghanistan with the loss of 38 lives, including 22 elite US Navy Seal members. A US claim that it had killed the Taliban leader responsible for the attack was denied by Taliban sources.

The Tibet government-in-exile chose Lobsang Sangay, a Fellow at Harvard Law School, as prime minister following the Dalai Lama's decision to confine his activities to religious matters.
