Son Servera.—The announcement was made yesterday after the Balearic government approved a petition from the council to declare the area as an affluent tourist destination.

Sources for the local trade department commented that this new measure “was approved so that big supermarkets inside the municipality can now benefit from the longer trading hours and extra business days. “Owners of these supermarkets and other small and medium sized businesses were the ones that initially approached the council to change the legislation,” said Rafel Valls, councillor for trade. “Locals who wished to buy something on Sundays were forced to go all the way to Cala Millor or Sa Coma where the supermarkets were open, but can now do so here in Son Servera. Also the centre of Son Servera becomes a very busy place on Fridays with lots of tourists coming to see the local weekly market during the Summer months. Every Friday local shops, restaurants and supermarkets are completely full so it's good we now have a few extra hours and days to extend that good pattern.” The Balearic government decided to add Son Servera to the tourist map which before compromised only coastal municipalities such as Cala Millor, Cala Bona, Puerto Verd, Puerto Roig and Costa dels Pins. Businesses in Son Servera can now benefit from the same freedom as those by the coast.
