WITH the start of the Spanish football season just ten days away Real Mallorca has finally managed to find the backers to solve its financial problems. AS of yesterday afternoon, the club is now owned by a consortium of 14 leading local business people and is no longer owned by the media group, Grupo Zeta. With players still waiting to get paid and heavy debts, Real Mallorca has managed to find the 17 million euros needed to plug the gap in its finances.
Meteo Alemany will remain as chairman of the club and can now set about concentrating on the football team as opposed to the club's financial predicament. Today he will take part in the crisis talks to decide whether or not the smaller clubs (the G–30) will go ahead with their threat to boycott the start of the season in a bid to delay the start until September 1 by which time they would have secured much needed television money.
