MARIA Antonia Munar, president of the Council of Majorca, has revealed that her speech on September 12, marking Majorca Day, will centre on the island's financial situation and the effects of immigration. She said that her speech would cover the current economic and social situation of Majorca, the changes derived from immigration and its impact on the habits, culture and language of the island, as well as “the measures which should be adopted” in view of this situation. She will also speak about the Constitution of the European Union, which, she claims, “can be improved in many aspects.” During the September 12 ceremony, British poet and writer Robert Graves, who lived in Deya for many years and is buried there, will be named an Adoptive Son of Majorca. This honour will also be bestowed on author George Sand (Aurore Dupin), who spent a winter at the Cartuja in Valldemossa with Chopin and Spanish scientist Odón de Buen y del Cos. Architect Guillem de Sagrera, who designed La Lonja, and journalist Miquels dels Sants Oliver will be named Chosen Sons, and the island's gold medal will go to Adan Diehl, founder of the Majorcan Tourism Board, and scientist Guillem Colom Casasnovas, among others.
