LOCAL police and EMAYA (Palma's water and drainage company) on Sunday had to deal with yet another spillage of contaminated water onto Cala Major beach, this time from the storm drain network.

The investigation began when residents and bathers, who were surprised by this spillage during the morning, complained.
The local police, who had been alerted by several telephone calls, sent a unit to see precisely what the problem was.
On verifying the spillage, the local police called EMAYA, which immediately dispatched a cleaning team to cordon off the area and stop people going into the sea. This was during a day when the beach was full because of the excellent weather.

The tourists and residents of the area were limited to watching how the EMAYA team controlled the spillage and proceeded, by means of an extractor, to remove it from the contaminated beach area.

With regard to this, Cala Major beach has had a summer with numerous similar incidents, although on this occasion the spillage came from the storm drains and not from the water purifying plant. Because of this the area was not affected by a bad smell, although some bathers did complain of a smell.
