STAFF REPORTER THE Guardia Civil in Santanyi reported yesterday that they have arrested a gang of four people on charges of theft from a number of supermarkets in the area.

The four, all Romanians, aged 19, 21, 23 and 24, were taken into custody last Thursday, sources close to the investigation confirmed.
The Guardia Civil claimed that since the beginning of the summer, the number of thefts of wallets, alcoholic drinks and other items from supermarkets in Santanyi had been on the increase. Officers set up a special watch to track the movements of the criminals.

After the arrest of the gang, the Guardia Civil recovered various effects which had been stolen from the interior of supermarkets in Cala d'Or and in Santanyi.

Initial assessments of the modus operandi of the gang, suggest that the four approached each robbery in an organised way, aware of their own specific “responsibilities”.

One of the gang would distract the attention of the staff in the supermarket, whilst another waited outside with a vehicle to ensure a quick getaway.
Meanwhile, the remaining two gang members speedily took produce off the shelves, above all bottles of alcohol, hiding them under their clothing. In order to support the weight of the bottles and other valuable items, the culprits apparently wore sports tights underneath their trousers so they would not be detected when going through the checkout.
