Palma.—Majorca's small to medium-sized business association, Pimeco, published the findings of its latest report yesterday reflecting trade in clothes, shoes and accessories businesses around the island.

Meanwhile, 57 percent of retailers surveyed said there was no real change between this year and last and just 6 percent claimed that business had improved.

Unlike in some previous reports, there was no major difference on this occasion between the opinions of traders in Palma and those in outlying areas of the island: 34 percent in Palma said takings were down in comparison with last year, 60 percent said they were the same and just 6 percent said they'd improved, whilst the same figures for the rest of the island were 40, 55 and 5 percent respectively.

In terms of global commercial activity last month (a combination of sales and influx of potential customers), Majorcan retailers gave a score of just 5 out of 10, a downturn of 2 decimal points compared with their assessment of July (5.2). August nevertheless has been valued 2 decimal points above the average for the past 12 months (4.8). When retailers were asked how they viewed their trade in August this year in comparison with the previous month of July, just 8 percent said that August trade had been better. More than half said August sales had been the same as those in July and 40 percent said they had been worse. Giving an overview of their report, a Director for Pimeco said that the results were a clear sign that consumer confidence had not returned despite a surge in tourism and discounts.
