PALMA
WITHIN the space of a month, the Balearic government will be offering alternatives to the tram-style train which the regional Transport ministry is planning to run through the streets of Manacor on its way to Arta, said local Mayor Antoni Pastor yesterday.

The move came after the Majorcan Unionist party, a member of the ruling government coalition, opted to back Pastor's centre-right Partido Popular (PP)ruling team on Manacor town council at a meeting of the Balearic Parliament in Palma yesterday. Pastor had long lambasted the regional Transport ministry for insisting on going ahead with a plan to run the tram-style train through the streets of Manacor despite a town council vote back in April this year to the contrary and the signatures of 5'000 local residents against the project.
