PALMA
SPAIN has begun its largest inquiry into the fate of thousands of people who went missing during the 1936-39 Civil War and rule of Francisco Franco but claims were made in Palma yesterday that as many as 3'000 Majorcans were tortured and executed by Franco's regime after the war ended.

The president of the Association for the Recovery of the Historical memory here in Majorca, Maria Antonia Oliver, said yesterday that the number of people who could have lost their lives under the Franco regime in Majorca could exceed 3'000.

Judge Baltasar Garzon who is leading the investigation has been handed 1'486 names but Oliver said it will be much higher.
