Newsdesk THE Palma city council has approved the construction of a new 2'170 metre bike-only lane at a cost of 180'000 euros. It will link the University with the historic city centre, going along Avenida Conde Sallent, Blanquerna, Plaza Santa Pagesa, Soldat Soberats Antoli, Colliure, Santa Lluisa de Marillac and Bisbe Bernat Nadal before linking up with the University bike only lane on the Valldemossa road.

Joaquin Rodríguez, the councillor in charge of the mobility department, said that it would be the first of a network of bike-only lanes, which, he said, would provide cyclists with “safe and comfortable conditions.” Three new bike-only lanes are due to be built: between Nuredduna, Prieto and Rafal Nou; Plaza Porta Santa Catalina and Son Rapinya and Joan Miró and Portixol.

The council wants to promote an alternative means of transport to private cars for daily commuters.
The new bike-only lane will be ready within two months, the councillor promised, adding that there would be parking facilities for bikes along the route.
