STAFF REPORTER PALMA'S annual Tapas Festival, “Tapalma” - described as a Majorcan gastronomy fair but in miniature - is starting tomorrow and will run to 11th October. All the finest that the region has to offer will be available at reduced prices in establishments along five pre-arranged “Tapas” routes, Pilar Carbonell, the President of the Restaurauteurs' Association of Majorca said yesterday.

Carbonell confirmed that 55 bars and restaurants will be taking part, five more than last year. The different routes have been listed as: “Santa Catalina”, “Centre”, “Plaça de Espanya”, and “Sa Llotja” which run through the centre of the city; and “Entrerutes” which is outside of Palma's historic centre.

Carbonell said that each of the establishments taking part in the festival will be offering tapas taster dishes accompanied by a glass of beer of wine at a very “economic” rate - a maximum of 2 euros. The aim of the event is that visitors to the city can get to know different bars and restaurants which may not be immediately visible from main routes and can try regional dishes that they would not otherwise have the chance to taste.

The combined total of 110 tapas dishes on the menu are being entered in the “Tapalma” competition. A select jury will include various renowned chefs on the island and critics from the Balearic Gastronomy Association.

The three top dishes will be announced on 12th October. Carbonell said that the winner of the competition in Palma will be representing Majorca at the National Tapas Competition taking place in Valladolid on the mainland betweeen 8th and 10th November.

Carbonell added that as a new feature this year, the Association has asked shopkeepers and retailers in the centre of Palma to keep their doors open one hour more than usual so that the city maintains a livelier atmosphere and that people who are spending money on the tapas routes can also take advantage of some late evening shopping.
