STAFF REPORTER A forest fire at Can Refila on Ibiza has been brought under control after destroying 6.5 hectares of territory, Emergency Services reported yesterday morning.

The area affected was in the Sierra de Llukisans, in the municipality of Sant Josep alongside the road between Ibiza town and Sant Joan. Nine people had to be evacuated from their homes.

The Balearic Nature Institute, “Ibanat” declared the seriousness of the fire, which broke out at around 2.15pm on Monday close to a petrol station, to be at level 1 on a scale of 1 to 3. Causes are being investigated. Fire fighting aircraft and helicopters were used to tackle the blaze in operations which involved 60 professional emergency workers.
