STAFF REPORTER FIVE monks belonging to the Order of Sant Paul and Saint Anthony are now living at the Trinitat hermitage in Valldemossa. Three of them have recently arrived from the Betlem sanctuary in Arta which was given into the hands of another Order on 20th September this year.

What all of them want, said Brother Paul yesterday was to be able to continue their lives peacefully, without disturbance from the outside world. The news of their community having grown in number has attracted local media attention and the monks are concerned that photographers and the curious will destroy their contemplative life.

Brother Paul, who is the rector of the small religious community, explained that Joan de la Concepcio Mir had founded the Order of Saint Paul and Saint Anthony in the 17th century at the Trinitat hermitage. In its day, the Order had spread to communities in Escorca, Puigpunynet, Deya, Santa Maria del Cami, Pollensa, Algaida, Inca, Felanitx, Petra and Pollensa. “Now that there are only five of us,” said Brother Paul, “it makes sense for us to live in what was the founding site.”
