Sa Pobla.—Margalida Vidal, PSM spokesman said yesterday that the dumps are giving a “really bad” image to the town.

She said that despite the fact that the plots of land are privately owned, it is the Council which should be responsible for getting rid of the old fridges, mattresses and rubble from building sites, and other waste material which has been accumulating. The Council will then pass the bill onto the owners.

Vidal said that it would also be a good idea to fence off the unused plots of land so that they weren't used again for illegal purposes.
But apart from the private ground, Vidal also expressed concern over the way that public spaces in Sa Pobla appear to be increasingly abandoned. “The lack of cleaning and general maintenance in the built-up area of the town,” said Vidal “is leading to a general deterioration.”

As an example, the Majorcan Socialists pointed to the children's playground out by the roundabout which diverts traffic around the town. Vidal claimed that there was no protective rubber layer on the surface of the playground and there were no swings.

Aside from the parks, said Vidal, it's noticeable that the Council hasn't bothered to repair public seating which has been broken or vandalised; and waste paper bins have been left in an appalling state. “Not to mention the lampposts,” she continued, “where cabling should be put out of the reach of children.”
