STAFF REPORTER RENTING living accommodation on Majorca is becoming cheaper and negotiation between property owner and tenant can result in prices coming down by as much as 100 euros a month, reported estate agency “4Caires” yesterday.

It is the first time in years, said a spokesman, that landlords have been willing to lower the price. What they are actually doing, he explained, is wanting to secure a good tenant who will pay regularly.

A three-bedroomed flat in the centre of Palma measuring 90 square metres with 2 bathrooms could have been put out for rent a year ago for around 750 euros. The same kind of property, claimed the estate agency, is now on the market for 650 euros. “It's in the interests of landlords to bring the price down,” said the spokesman. “The tenant which is most sought after is someone who is employed by the government - in teaching or Balearic health services for example - who has a regular, all-year-round income.” Another favoured profile is that of a tenant who is more mature who can provide references, he added.
