Palma.—The Autumn cycling season is upon us with professionals and amateurs flocking to the island from all over Europe to make the most of the perfect training conditions.

The island is in fact currently hosting the International Masters Week cycling event.
And, to coincide with the competition, the 112 emergency centre has issued a warning to cyclists to take greater care when out on the island's roads.
Over the past month, since the new cycling season began, 112 have dealt with an average of two incidents involving cyclists every day and the emergency services are urging cyclists to be more careful and help improve road safety.

However, the emphasis is not only on cyclists. Drivers are also being reminded to keep a sharper eye out for cyclists and to give them more space.
The 112 emergency centre has drawn up a list of tips to help protect cyclists.

It includes advice such as wearing a helmet, knee and elbow pads and making sure that the bicycle has front and rear lights.
What is more, cyclists are urged to wear bright clothes as well as reflective jackets or bands and make sure that their bicycle is in safe and secure running order.

In the event of there not being a cycle lane, cyclists should use the pavement and , in the case of no pavement, to try and cycle as close to the verge as possible.

And, in doing so, try to keep a straight a line as possible and make no sudden movements which could catch a driver out.
Stay away from the rear of lorries of large vehicle which will impede vision and try to avoid busy roads is the best advice.
