Palma.—The 21-year-old arrested last week after being found in possession of 140m kilos of explosive material which police suspect he intended to use to make pipe bombs and attack the Balearic University, is to undergo psychiatric and psychological examination as asked for by his defense lawyer.

Suspect Juan Manuel Moralles's lawyer, Agustina Alonso, said yesterday that the forensics now have to set the date for the examination.
The young man, who apparently intended to carry out an attack similar to the Columbine bombings in the United States in 1999, has been held on remand in Palma Prison since last Friday after being denied bail but, before his lawyers prepare their case for the defense, they want to know what frame of mind their client is in.

He left home just over a month ago and was living in a rented flat in the old part of Palma but his parents have said that their son was not capable of carrying out such a violent act.

He used to spend most of his time making money by playing on line poker but has denied that the money he won was being used to fund the alleged pipe bomb attack.

According to police, in the suspect's diary they found his plans to attack the university but his lawyer has explained that he used to use his diary as a vehicle for venting his anger and frustration by writing such threats, although he never intended to carry them out.

The case continues.
