THE Palma tram project, planned to run from the Avenidas out to the airport, on to El Arenal and in the opposite direction to Calvia, has been put on hold because funding agreements have still not been signed with Central Government, said the Balearic Transport ministry yesterday.

Transport director, Antoni Verger said that the regional government remains “very concerned” by the delay in a commitment from Madrid to finance the project to the tune of 380 million euros. His comments came despite the fact that Central Government's Minister for Public Works, Jose Blanco had given reassurances about the funding in a recent visit to Palma. Until pen has been put to paper, the Transport ministry can't put the construction project out to tender.

As a separate issue, Verger said yesterday that technicians are suggesting that in some of the narrow streets in the outskirts of Palma where the tram will run, such as those in Es Molinar, a one-way system will have to be put in place meaning that routes for traffic in the opposite direction will have to be diverted.

Verger added that “none of these technical issues present a problem, they can all be dealt with, but we can't start until the issue of money from Central Government is resolved.”
