STAFF REPORTER THE first 48 hours of the early December long weekend have been marred by a series of road accidents and collisions on Majorca which have left more than 15 people injured, the Traffic department of the Guardia Civil reported yesterday.

In the early hours of Sunday morning on the road from Campos to Santanyi, a vehicle crashed into a stone wall, bounced off and overturned in the middle of the road, trapping five people. After the alarm was raised, the injured were ferried to different hospital centres around the island. The causes of the crash are being investigated.

Meanwhile, a stretch of road between the exit from Son Rapinya and Palma cemetery was the setting for another accident which took place in the early hours of Saturday morning. For reasons as yet unknown, a driver lost control of his vehicle and overturned. Firemen, ambulances and Guardia Civil were quick to attend the scene.

Further collisions happened in the Palma suburb of Genova next to the Hotel Val Paraiso in calle Aragon. The first accident involved a young couple who were driving along Calle Francesc Fiol just after midnight on Saturday and accidentally collided with a wall, narrowly avoiding hurtling over a precipice. Both driver and passenger needed hospital treatment. The second took place at Calle Aragon No. 238 when a young motorcyclist crashed sideways into a car and was thrown to the ground, semi-conscious. He was taken by ambulance to the Palmaplanas clinic, but without serious injury.

Around the rest of the island during the first 48 hours of the holiday, there was a large number of minor collisions after vehicles skidded, largely due to road surfaces being wet.
