Palma de Majorca.—The Guardia Civil will be out in force on Balearic roads breathalysing drivers for its annual pre-Christmas campaign. The tests will continue until Sunday, December 18 to coincide with the various parties that take place in the run-up to the festive season.

This year, Spain's spinal injuries and disabled persons' association will be helping out with the campaign, since many of its members are victims of accidents caused by drunk drivers.

Officers warn that alcohol consumption prior to getting in the car increases the chances of accidents nine fold, since it causes fatigue, blurred vision, lack of concentration and awareness, and slows down reaction time considerably.

Lunchtime
While the anti-drink driving campaign will continue, as usual, throughout the festive season, during this week, spot checks are going to be thrown up during the day as we as over night. According to Guard Civil Traffic department Officers, this is the week when most companies hold their Christmas parties and many of them are lunchtime events, hence why the controls will be thrown up throughout the day in this first phase of the crackdown on drinking and driving which will run into the New Year.
