Nine families from Petra struggling to make ends meet have been given a boost by local charity Caritas, the local Council, La Caixa bank and Apanema, a Majorcan agriculture ecological production association.

These groups have agreed to provide the families with their own farming allotments which they can manage according to their needs.

"This could be an opportunity to educate the families as well, so maybe in the future they can work on the trade," Miquel Monroig, spokesperson for Caritas Petra said, adding that these plots have been made available by an individual, who was not named. Some of these families have reached an emergency situation and they will be given 100 metres of land each which has just recently been farmed. A similar movement has recently been put in motion in Capdepera, also with the participation of Apanema.Thirty citizens in a difficult financial situation have also been given 16 allotments of 50 square metres each so they can harvest basic fruits and vegetables to boost their alimentation.
