.—The CCOOWorkers’ Commission yesterday stressed that it is more than prepared to negotiate a new deal for the hostelry and transport sectors in order to avoid industrial action being taken this Summer, however at the same time, secretary general Gines Diaz warned that should talks break down, then the union is prepared to ruin the season so that future seasons run smoothly.

"We need to start working on a global agreement and a model for the next 25 years," he said.

The new contracts for the hostelry and transport sectors will affect 112,00 and 4,000 people and so far, the hoteliers have proposed freezing wages which the union considers "humiliating and provocative."

"We are not going to ruin Easter because talks are still in their early stages but, if we need to take industrial action, we will do so when it is going to hurt the Summer season the hardest," Diaz warned.

"What is more, if employees were not forced to work so many unpaid illegal extra hours and days off during the season, as many as 15,000 new jobs could be created to fill the void," the secretary general added.

The CCOO and the UGT General Workers’’ Union have a meeting with the Balearic Confederation of Business Associations on 20 March" and we are going to make it clear to the industry that we are not prepared to accept the conditions they have put on the table so far.

"And, if we are unable to defend the rights of the workers’ then we will support industrial action," Diaz said.

It appears that workers’ are already concerned about their new contracts and are already calling for protest action.
