The tourist season officially starts tomorrow and it had been hoped that the industry would have helped to have reduced the number of  people out of work.

Palma.—But, it has not, according to the latest Active Population Survey.
The data reveals that, during the first quarter of this year, 18,8000 more people lost their jobs in comparison to the first three months of last year and the local opposition parties launched a scathing attack on the Balearic Government.
The survey also revealed that there are now 51,000 households in the Balearics in which no one has a job and the opposition parties described the situation as “dangerous, alarming and extremely dramatic”. David Abril, MP for the eco-nationalist party MES, accused the government of having done nothing except hope that the region has a good tourist season, underlining the fact that so far this year, tourism has in fact let the region down with a fall in overseas visitors and a drop in the amount they have spent.
