THE local authorities are promising yet another united front to tackle the ills of Magalluf after the infamous “sex game video.” This is the usual reaction from the local authorities. Now, if I had a euro for all the crackdowns which the local authorities were going to launch I would be a rich man! But thankfully someone has put the whole Magalluf issue into perspective and has spelled it out. The person responsible for this is none other than Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, Vice President of the Melia Hotel Group which has announced massive investment in Magalluf this week. He says in an opinion letter which we reproduce today that : “We demand that the greed and unscrupulousness of a few businesses, if you can call them that, do not ruin Majorca’s reputation, especially with a market as important as the British market, nor ruin the historic opportunity that Magalluf has for recovery after years of shame. Do not abandon us.” Now, these are words from a man who knows the Majorcan tourist industry inside out. Like the rest of us he is saying that enough is enough. I agree totally. Magalluf does have a golden opportunity to change for the better with the massive investment which has been announced by the Melia Group and in years to come perhaps Magalluf can be the pride of Majorca rather than the shame. I sincerely hope that this video marks a turning point in the history of Magalluf. We can´t continue like this, something needs to be done and fast.
