The Balearics are considered to be one of the wealthiest regions of Spain and Palma one of the richest capitals, but not everyone is enjoying the benefits. This summer a total of 8,232 people have had to live through extreme poverty in Palma,  according to a report the city council has sent to central government asking for further aid in providing greater assistance, especially at soup kitchens. Palma City Councillor for Social Welfare,  Aina Ferriol, has explained that this figure represents two percent of the population of Palma, but is 4.4 percent lower than the national average,  according to a study carried out by the Catholic church charity Caritas.
Nevertheless, the city council is deeply concerned about the situation but, according to the opposition Socialist party, did very little this summer to ease the situation.
