alma.—Keep that thought of you lying on the beach or dining on a terrace firmly in your minds for the next couple of days because a cold snap is going to hit the Balearics today, pushing temperatures down, bringing gale force winds and heavy rain.
The Balearics was yesterday placed on weather alert for today with the most adverse weather conditions forecast to be in Ibiza and the west and south of Majorca.
These two areas are on orange level two alert - the rest of the region is on yellow level one.
Sources at the Balearic Met. Office said yesterday that the cold front is expected to move across the Balearics between 10am and 3pm after which conditions should ease, apart from the rain.
Last month has been one of the hottest and driest on record, not only in the Balearics, but areas of the mainland as well.
Temperatures in Barcelona, for example,  were 3.7ºC above average, the hottest since records began in 1914, during a sweltering October in which Catalan beaches were packed with people enjoying the unseasonal sunshine.
Head of the Balearic Met. office, Maria Jose Guerrero, said that the winds are going to be strong and south westerly from today and that is going to make sea conditions extremely rough while there could be some outbreaks of torrential rain.
And, temperatures are going to drop relatively sharply - today they are going to be around 8ºC lower than they were over the weekend.
