The Spanish Air Force has announced that next year’s European Air Chiefs Conference (EURAC) will he held at the Hotel Formentor in Pollensa between 4 and 8 May.

EURAC was established in 1993 in order that chiefs of the various air forces in Europe could have a forum to discuss issues related to air power, co-operation between air forces, military efficiency and profitability.

This year, EURAC met in Milan. Countries which took part were: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

The next meeting, given the current conflict between Russia and Turkey, for the moment at least, will potentially be given greater importance.

As a complement to the conference, an air show at Son Sant Joan in Palma is being planned. This was discussed last week at the Ministry of the Presidency (the minister for which is Marc Pons) by representatives of the regional government, the airports authority (Aena), Palma town hall, the Council of Majorca, the Majorca Aeronautics Foundation, La Caixa bank and the Pimem businesses’ association.

There had been a plan for an air show to take place in July next year - to celebrate the centenary of the first flight to Majorca by Salvador Hedilla - but this has now been moved forward to coincide with the EURAC gathering. The date is expected to be 7 May, though the matter of the costs of organising it still requires some hammering-out.
