The annual overnight walk from the Plaça Güell in Palma to Lluc will start at 11pm on Saturday, 13 August. This is later than in previous years, the date having been chosen in order to establish all necessary safety requirements.

The walk was at one point called off, but the Council stepped in to assist with funding. The Grup Güell cultural association explains that there was an increasingly difficult situation surrounding the staging of the walk. Economic crisis was one factor, but so have been the disappearance of subsidies and changes in regulations. Even with the assistance from the Council, more help is required in order to cover costs of 40,000 euros.

There has been criticism of the later date for the walk, but the group angrily dismisses claims that this has been because of a lack of management. Pep Egea, the president of the association, says that the whole Grup Güell is "sick and tired" of having to overcome all the obstacles being put in the way. "After 42 years of the walk, the tradition should be protected by the public administrations."

Prior to the start of the walk there will be, as is also traditional, a party. Various artists have already been signed up for this.

Registration for the walk can now be made via www.desguellallucapeu.es as well as in the Plaça Güell and at the Decathlon stores in Marratxi and Son Moix. Times are: 8am to 1pm and 5pm to 8pm weekdays; 8am to 1pm this Saturday; and all day on Saturday, 13 August.
