A British cycling tourist, whose age has variously been given as 70 and 86, was killed this afternoon when he was struck by a 4x4 vehicle.

The incident occurred just after two o'clock this afternoon on the Carretera Arta main road. The cyclist, said to have been riding in a perfectly correct manner, was hit by the vehicle that was being driven by a 48-year old resident of Alcudia. He tested positive for both alcohol and drugs, specifically cocaine. Because of the seriousness of the incident, he will be in court in Inca tomorrow.

The cyclist's injuries were such that he died at the scene, despite the rapid attention of medics.

The bay of Alcudia resorts - Alcudia itself, Playa de Muro and Can Picafort, are full of cyclists at present. The Guardia Civil's Trafico division is reminding drivers and cyclists to be careful.
