Holiday giant Jet2 chief executive Steve Heapy has written to the president of Lanzarote to ask for clarification over “inflammatory and offensive” comments suggesting the Canary island wished to rely less on British tourists. In the Balearics there have been calls for curb the number of tourists because of fears of overcrowding.
Dolores Corujo said at the ITB trade fair in Berlin that Lanzarote aimed to attract more travellers from mainland Europe to reduce a reliance on British tourists.
Heapy told Travel Weekly: “We heard about what the minister had said at ITB in Berlin last week, so on Monday, I took the initiative and wrote to her, copying in all the hoteliers in Lanzarote.
“As the largest UK tour operator to Lanzarote, I contacted her for clarification over her inflammatory and quite frankly offensive comments about British tourists, to ask her what she means and to what extent she wants to reduce British tourism," he told Travel Weekly.

I happen to like the Canaries in February for a month ! It’s free of the MDB trolls and it’s warmer then the expensive island of Majorca…. Car hire for two weeks is circa €360 compared to Majorca’s offering of €600 ish for the same duration….. so you legends in your own minds in Mallorca who think your island is the gods give to the Yanks, then proceed with your expedition of your Nirvana and income…. Don’t forget, us Brits have a choice….. and we go where our Euros want us and not to your enclave of Branson type accommodations of higher class limited money income. No post from Captain Hindsight/foresight Williams for a change? Maybe he has gone to Benidorm to stretch out his Euros? ….
Went to Lanzagrotty and Tenerough years ago, two of the worst holidays ever. Lanzagrotty is windy and like being on the moon and Tenerough is full of trailer trash that want Blackpool in the sun. If I were Jet2 I would pull my custom from the stinking place.
Strange isn’t it that after 60years of mass tourism which the canaries was a pioneer. That this lady is now concerned about the national bias of visitors to those islands . When I lived in Frankfurt in the mid-eighties the travel agents there, were full of glossy videos of wind surfers and other wonderful pursuits in that area. So if the other nationals haven’t succumbed to the delights of those islands by now is it the fact that maybe they don’t want to go there. Put off by those islands, time share touts , three cup con men , pick pockets and resorts architectures that makes Magaluf look interesting. Or maybe the industry in that area specialised in U.K. visitors for a reason. Personally I’ve been twice many years ago . And won’t be repeating a visit. If I require winter sun I go east or west.. In the summer why fly 5hrs when I can fly 2.5. ? to the other similar offerings. But some like the place.
