Out and about at the Academy School

Reception 1 had a wonderful day at Fresopolis strawberry farm. They were taught about how to care for and feed different animals such as cows, goats, horses, chickens, pigs, and ducks. They also took part in a senses experience of smelling different plants, picking, and eating strawberries and planting their own sunflower.

Year 1 loved their excursion to Dinosaurland, where they discovered incredible dinosaurs hidden in the vegetation. They also enjoyed finding fossils in the sand and watching the show. This trip links with their learning in the classroom and has really inspired them to find out so much more about this amazing part of our history.

Year 9 travelled to the village of Sant Elm in Andratx and on board the local passenger boat they crossed over to the island of Sa Dragonera. In this beautiful and protected Natural Parc they walked all together to the lighthouse to enjoy this unspoiled part of the Tramuntana mountains with its interesting landscape, fauna and flora. They were very lucky with the weather which was cloudy but still enabled them to have their picnic lunch and spend some time on Sant Elm beach before returning to school. Some brave ones played in the water!

The children in Year 4 and Year 8 have had a wonderful time sailing and kayaking in Puerto Portals! Some children even saw a dolphin! They students worked really well in their groups, had such fun and showed a positive and respectful attitude for each other and the instructors.

Year 5 visited the botanical gardens in Soller. They attended a workshop that looked at the different uses of the plants in the garden. Then they had the opportunity to make a keyring from the seeds of one of the many beautiful plants found in the botanical gardens. Finally, the group took the bus to the port. Much fun was had by all playing on the sand and paddling in the water!

Year 10 went on a 2.5h trek from Cala Romantica to Cala Varques on the east coast of Mallorca. They enjoyed the walk and saw and recognised the coastal formations and vegetation they have been studying in their geography and biology lessons. Their geography and science teachers Mrs Foster and Ms Scott were very proud when the students were able to tell them which marine and sub-aerial processes had formed the arch they saw!

Reception 2 classes were very excited to go to Palma Aquarium. They participated in a workshop in which a swordfish manages to rescue a whale trapped in plastics and rubbish, with the help of his marine friends. This theme is important to us at The Academy, where we try to recycle, re-use and reduce as much as possible. The children learned about the characteristics of whales and other species, about their current problems and the importance of caring for the ocean.
