Catalonia is one the hardest-hit regions in Spain, with over 400,000 cases and almost 9,000 deaths.

Rajoy has dismissed Puigdemont and announced that there will be a regional election on 21 December.

There is concern in the Balearics because of "historical, economic, social and linguistic links with Catalonia". Puigdemont is expected to declare independence this evening.
