I was walking on the promenade of Son Matias beach in Palmanova the other day, when I spotted an interesting new place, where another bar/restaurant had been abandoned for the past few years… While I was checking out their menu board, the owner came out to introduce himself and invited me in to show me around and to present me to a few of his staff who walked past us. Little did he - a super friendly guy called Ingo - know that he and his bar/restaurant would end up in my column a few days later!

Calvia beach House is described on their website as “Mallorca’s new boho-chic bar and restaurant escape, offering personal service in a laid-back atmosphere on the shores of Son Matias Beach in Palma Nova.” My first impression was so good that I came back with a friend that afternoon and then again the next day with another friend!

Both the interior and the terrace were really stylish, yet had a relaxed and inviting vibe to them. I imagined that I would be equally welcome here both barefoot and in high heels.

Their cocktail menu featured a dozen or so of the usual classics. On a hot, humid day a couple Hugos sounded very refreshing! Made with elderflower, cava, lemon juice, fresh mint, lime & soda, the cocktails came in large wine glasses, served with a couple of large ice cubes and decorated with a few mint leaves each. My friend commented that they were generous on the alcohol, which, considering that we did not have to do anything in particular later, we did not object to! Hugo looked simple, but tasted great, ever so slightly sweet and super refreshing, thanks to lemon, lime and mint flavours. As a child I loved drinking diluted elderflower cordial, so this cocktail made me recall some nice summer afternoons at my grandparents’ house…

I noticed that Calvia Beach House had an eclectic food menu, consisting of snacks and mains from all over the world, including Italian, Japanese, Peruvian and British favourites. I am really looking forward to trying some of them over the coming months, so watch this space!
Till next time – cheers!
