This week everyone who is anyone in Palma - inclu ing the King of Spain, Felipe VI - is going down to Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP) for the event of the year: the 41st Copa del Rey regatta, sponsored by Mapfre. The Copa del Rey regatta, sponsored by Mapfre, is a prestigious sailing event held annually in Palma. Organised by the Real Club Náutico de Palma, it attracts top sailors and sailing enthusiasts from around the world, including the aforementioned King who is also racing. With its diverse classes and breath-taking Mediterranean backdrop, the regatta showcases thrilling competition and sportsmanship. This iconic regatta remains a celebration of sailing excellence, camaraderie, and environmental consciousness, leaving a lasting impression on all who participate and spectate.

While I was invited down here to watch some of the races, I was also aware of my looming deadline for this column, so I decided to combine work with pleasure and have a drink to write about. As my former landlords and some other friends have boats here, I have been to The Club’s Bar Café many times and enjoyed a coffee or a cocktail on their terrace. Today, I went with Aperol Spritz. It came in a large wine glass, with a generous serving of alcohol and plenty of ice – perfect for a hot day! This place is also known for great mojitos and several other classics, as well as a good selection of snacks and sandwiches to accompany the drinks. You would be hard pressed to find a better spot in town to watch the boats while the sun goes down. Regatta will just be adding to the buzz this week!

If you are in the area, this week or any other time of the year, I would also recommend you try the two restaurants within RCNP. El Náutico offers some good Mallorcan food made with high quality ingredients, while La Cantina has been known for great paella, enjoyed by the workers, the boat owners and the casual passers-by alike.
