THE blame game over the lack of winter tourism continued yesterday with hoteliers claming that the government had shown little or no interest in trying to attract more visitors to the island during the low season. And they also claimed that the local authorities were supportive but only with words of encouragement rather than actual proposals or money. For once I agree with the hoteliers. A promotion campaign underlining the joys of the Balearics during the low season would certainly get the ball rolling and encourage hotels to open and airlines to operate more flights. The fact that the summer season is getting shorter every year was clearly evident yesterday when official figures showed that the unemployment rate had risen in the Balearics in September as scores of hotels closed their doors for business. While the Spanish government continues to say that it has been a record season it is becoming very clear than in the Balearics the season is getting shorter and the spending power of tourists left alot to be desired. But I might have some good news on the issue of winter tourism. Two weeks ago we launched a campaign on our facebook site and in print calling for more winter tourists. I am happy to say that as a result of this campaign they may now be some light at the end of the tunnel and we have been contacted by a leading British company which is willing to lend a helping hand and put Majorca on the map during the winter.
