A series of forest fires broke out across Majorca today, with all leave being cancelled for forestry firefighters because of fears that strong winds could cause serious complications.

The first fire was reported in Sant Agusti at 11.30. Two helicopters and two firefighter planes aided crews on the ground battle the blaze which destroyed some 7,000 square metres of scrubland. The fire was under control by 12.30 but by 17.00 was yet to have been declared ‘extinguished’. Fire crews are expected to remain on the scene during the night.

The second fire was reported in Manacor at 12.30. The blaze broke out by the cemetery and destroyed eight hectares of scrubland. Firefighters are also keeping an eye this overnight.

The third fire was reported at 13.00 in Son Doblons in the municipality of Petra.
