Charlie CoolIt's a convenient designation. For example, when Andy Murray wins, he's "British", but when he loses, he's a Scot. "Brexit" was a "British" decision. True, It affected the whole of "Britain", yet only the English voted in favour of it (in Wales it was overwhelmingly English expats that voted for it. Native Welsh voters overwhelmingly voted against it). In fact, the entire saga was conceived, produced and directed by... England. The rest of "Britain" had little involvement other than the vote. And despite their objections, they were all (narrowly) outgunned by England. So, in practical terms, referring to "British" as "English" isn't all that much of a stretch.
Nations outside of the UK refer to the 'English', meaning the English, Welsh and Scotch. They have little concept if the difference between English and British. They see English as the dominant nationality, and refer to all Britons as such. These so-called 'English' resorts are actually frequented by all four home nationals.
George WarnerDistasteful? Its hardly any secret that English tourists tend to be dominant in the lower-end resorts. It's quite common for British media to publish articles listing which resorts are the cheapest, and frankly, this publication, along with many reader comments here seem to focus on the lack of cheapness in Mallorca leading to an exodus of Brits that will render it impoverished if Brits aren't offered low prices - although there's no tangible evidence of any such exodus nor any impact on tourism - quite the opposite actually. It's also no secret that Calas used to be an all but exclusively English all-in resort before they upgraded it a bit. I haven't been over there in years, but my understanding was that due to those changes, it's no longer English dominant. Yet as you seem to indicate, apparently it's still much the same as before, so that suggests it's likely still English dominant.
First of all… Morgan very distasteful comment with nothing to do with the article itself. Second of all… calles is still a terrible place. Thirdly to the author…. It’s just rape. You don’t call rape between a man and woman “straight rape” rape is rape no need to add “gay” at the start of it… stop putting us in your boxes.
Years ago, Calas de Mallorca was an exclusively English 3* all-inclusive resort. It was in rather poor condition, hotels looking tired... the few restaurants and bars catered solely to English tastes, serving (frozen) pizzas and burgers, curry dishes made with canned sauces, something resembling "full English" breakfasts, English beer, even something resembling roast beef & pud on Sundays. And plenty of junk shops. ...but it was the cheapest place on the island, hence the attraction. But around 2015, the hotels invested some money. They painted, upgraded, added some new amenities. The restaurants (hotel and independent) diversified their menus and started serving house made food using fresh ingredients... and that increased the overall quality (one hotel even went 4*) ...and of course the nightly room rates increased. Naturally, others started booking it, and it was no longer an exclusively English resort. I haven't been there in years, but apparently it's still rather English over there. Is it still relatively cheap?
