Palma police have arrested a mother who abandoned her newly born baby and fled the hospital. The baby, who was born prematurely and was placed in an intensive care unit, later tested positive for various illegal substances.

A police spokesperson said; "On Saturday morning a pregnant woman was taken to hospital in an ambulance after feeling unwell. She gave birth in the ambulance with the child, which had been born prematurely being placed in an intensive care unit. The woman later fled the hospital but was arrested by police hours later. She was questioned by officers."

The hospital had no details about the child although it tested positive for various illegal drugs. The hospital has so far not given an update on the child.

Police are continuing with their investigations.
