At midday Monday, a bolt of lightning caused considerable damage to the Mont-Sion church in Porreres when it struck the bell tower, causing some of the brickwork to fall off.

And, the inclement weather is set to continue on Tuesday, with storms and rain forecast for the Balearics and daytime highs below the norm for the second half of August. Tomorrow, these highs will return to typical values of 29 and 30 degrees, while the general weather pattern will stabilise and bring far more settled conditions.

The worst of the weather at the weekend affected Escorca in the Tramuntana mountains where there were rainfalls of 50 litres per square metre on Saturday and a further 28 on Sunday.
