The president of the Council of Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, confirmed on Tuesday that the change to the speed limit on Palma's Via Cintura will be introduced in November.

Explaining in a radio interview that reports are still being finalised by the mobility department, he added that the intention is not to restore the 120 kilometres per hour limit. This was how it was until February 2021, when it was reduced to 80.

Galmés of the Partido Popular, who has been president since June, made a change to the speed limit an election pledge, though he didn't state in the interview what the new limit will be. There is speculation that it will be 100. The Council has also suggested that there may be variable limits for specific sections of the road.

Meanwhile, the Council has been painting some continuous lines at certain points on the road. These are designed to prevent dangerous lane changes at exits, which cause cars to brake and slow traffic down.

In the Andratx direction, changing lanes has been prohibited on three sections - between the exit for the Estadi Balear and the Germans Escales sports centre; from the Inca motorway almost to the Son Hugo exit; and between the Soller and Valldemossa exits.

In the direction of the airport, these lines will be between the Soller and Son Hugo exits and the Inca motorway exit and the access to C. Aragon. These markings are between 300 metres and 1.5 kilometres and their purpose is to prevent sudden lane changes at exits.
