The Balearic Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment will reinforce the Inter-island Forest Fire Operation (OIIF) planned for this time of year from this Thursday until Sunday, because of the high temperatures and lack of rain over the past few weeks.

In a press release, the department headed by Joan Simonet explained that the maximum risk period for forest fires continues until Sunday so the ministry will keep the operation deployed with three helicopters and a ground loading aircraft (ACT) in Mallorca for rapid intervention in case of an incident on all the islands and a helicopter in Ibiza.

At the same time, the on-call staff of the operation has been reinforced with an Environmental Agent (AMA) and a first-attack helicopter brigade in Son Bonet and a ground brigade in Mallorca, in addition to the usual on-call staff.

The ministry stressed that the lighting of fires in forest areas or within 50 metres of them remains prohibited, and administrative authorisation is required for those activities that involve the use of fire on land within 500 metres of forest land.

This year a total of 78 forest fires have been recorded on the islands, affecting a total of 19.49 hectares of land.
By islands, 51 of these incidents correspond to Mallorca; 20 to Ibiza; four to Minorca and three to Formentera.
