The suspect accused of starting several fires in Esporles (Mallorca) in 2019 failed to appear in court in Palma this morning to stand trial and the Provincial Court has issued a search and arrest warrant.

The trial of the German has been suspended and, for the moment, a new date has not been set.
The man had spent about a year in pre-trial detention following his arrest, but had been released with the precautionary measure of passport withdrawal.

To date, his whereabouts are unknown and, according to sources, the local police of Algaida, where he is thought to have been registered, have no record of an address.

The facts date back to mid-August 2019.
According to the prosecution, in the early morning of the 18th to the 19th, the accused went to a public car park in Esporles and set fire to the two front tyres of an official vehicle belonging to the Department of the Environment before using a sharp object to puncture the rear tyres of the same vehicle.

Subsequently, at around midnight on 20 August 2019, the accused went to a plot of land in the same municipality to, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, started a fire which affected a total of 7,120 square metres of forest land, within the Tramuntana Natural Park.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office says that the accused again acted in a similar manner at around 6.20 a.m. on 25 August 2019, on two other plots in the Esporles industrial estate, affecting a total of 2,000 square metres of forest land.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the facts constitute a continuous crime of causing forest fires and a crime of damage by arson, and is asking that the accused serves a total of eight years in prison and is fined 8,100 euros.

In addition, as civil liability, the accused is being asked to pay 7,751.73 euros to cover the costs incurred as a result of the work carried out by the Fire Brigade to fight the various fires.
