Pilar Bonet, who resigned as the Council of Mallorca's councillor for finance and public function two weeks ago, has been accused by a former employer of having embezzled 2.7 million euros.

A court in Palma has now received the complaint from Globalia, the Llucmajor-based travel group where Pilar Bonet worked for some 25 years prior to becoming part of the Partido Popular's administration at the Council of Mallorca following last year's election.

The alleged embezzlement is said to have occurred over several years. It has been traced back to 2011, but it is understood that there are indications that it could have started before then.

Now that the company's complaint, based on audit reports, is with the courts, it will be admitted for processing and an investigation will be officially opened. As Globalia is based in Llucmajor, the Guardia Civil will be in charge of any investigation rather than the National Police. Pilar Bonet was also a councillor at Llucmajor town hall between 2019 and 2023 and continued to work part-time for Groundforce, the Globalia airport handling division.

Her lawyer, Antonio Martínez, has insisted that the presumption of innocence must be respected, accusing elements of the media of having engaged "in a kind of private justice".
