In 1935, the Conservatory in Palma, which had come into being as the Conservatori de Música Balears in 1879, was officially declared the regional conservatory, and a superior one at that, by the national ministry for public instruction.

A whole load of Christmas markets and concerts across the island. Among the highlights - the Balearic Symphony Orchestra and children's choirs on Thursday and the Teatre Principal children and adult choirs on Saturday. Swedish school children's choir at the Cathedral for Santa Lucia (Thursday). A Russian Christmas at Palma Auditorium (Saturday). "A Christmas Carol" (with carol singing) also at the auditorium - and in English.

The funfair returns to Palma on Saturday. The Fira del Ram Easter fair, which will last until 15 April, is at the Son Fusteret showground. Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" features an array of choirs plus musicians and soloists; it's at the Palacio de Congresos in Palma on Friday. The Lluc Naturesport fair is on Sunday.

The final acts for Carnival are on Tuesday. The burial (and/or burning) of the sardine marks the end of Carnival and the start of Lent. The most famous of these burials is in Portol, Marratxi. Otherwise ... the Balearic Symphony Orchestra continues its season with a Thursday programme that includes Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition". Brothers in Band, the Dire Straits tribute, is at Palma's auditorium on Saturday.

A big week for fairs. Inca has its first fair, this one devoted to the land; it's the Felanitx "pebre bord" paprika fair, and the Campos one for sobrassadas and other pig products; Consell features a wine fair for the first time; and Santanyi has a demons fire-run on Saturday night. The Balearic Symphony Orchestra's new season starts. There are two days of vinyl and memorabilia plus a lot of live music at Palma Arena, and on Saturday evening it is the procession in Palma for La Beata.

It's Saint Paddy's Day on Friday, but Santa Ponsa will be waiting until Sunday for the celebrations. On the day itself, Shamrock on Palma's Paseo Marítimo has a night of Irish music (and some which isn't). The Balearic Symphony Orchestra season at Palma's auditorium continues this Thursday with a performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3, considered to be one of the most technically challenging concertos of them all.

The Lebanese violinist Ara Malikian is now playing three dates at the Trui Theatre - Thursday and Sunday are not sold out; Brothers in Band (Dire Straits tribute) are at the auditorium on Saturday; and Tomeu Penya continues his intimate acoustic tour with two dates in Sa Pobla at the weekend.
